Getting the most out of HUD with carplay

I've been messing around with the tech in my 2021 Toyota Camry XSE and trying get a setup that actually takes advantage of the HUD, cos I love the concept, but I'm finding the limits of what it will and won't display when running apple carplay. Right now, when I use apple maps or google maps via carplay, I'm not getting turn by turns in the HUD, just the usual speed, cruise info, and lane assist stuff, so I did some digging and it looks like turn by turn is only if you're using the native Toyota navigation system, not anything from your phone.

Kind of a bummer, honestly, because I don't really use the built in nav much, not that its terrible, its not just better than the other options, but is there a workaround? some systems in other brands like BMW or Audi will mirror nav directions from carplay or android auto to the HUD, so it feels like it could be possible, just not enabled. or...maybe it's a trim specific thing and I'm outta luck?

I get what you mean. Sadly, Toyota's HUD does not support turn by turm from CarPlay or Android Auto, only from the built-in nav system. I don't think there's a workaround yet. I just the nav just for HUDwhile still running CarPlay for everything else. Not ideal but it is what it is
