weird whirring sound under hood—any guesses?

just noticed this high-pitched whir every time I press the gas. gets higher as I hit 40 mph, doesn't change when the gears shift. the second I take my foot off, it stops. at highway speeds, the noise kinda gets drowned out but is still there. driving me nuts.
tried to check it out, and I've heard everything from belts to alternators being the cause. nothing else seems wrong though—no lights, warnings, or performance issues. the car's still under warranty, so I'm taking it to the dealership soon. anyone else dealt with this? just wondering what I'm walking into.

youre saying the noise isnt tied to RPM or shifting? sounds like your car might just be in a classic mood. jokes aside, this could be linked to the transaxle which sometimes throws a little tantrum by making a whining noise that gets louder with speed. it would also explain why the sound changes depending on whether youre accelerating or just coasting.

if it were me id get it checked out sooner rather than later just in case the transaxle is running low on fluid. cars can be drama queens when it comes to fluids and you dont want to deal with a full blown meltdown. let us know how it turns out and fingers crossed its nothing too serious.

Sounds like classic belt or alternator bearing noise, especially since it tracks with RPM and stops when you lift. Good call taking it in under warranty,let us know what they find, curious now too

I had something similar once and it turned out to be a bearing in the alternator starting to go, nothing serious at first, but enough to make that constant whine. Hopefully it's something small like that and they catch it early. Let us know how it goes… I get how stuff like this can really take the joy out of the drive.

I'm pretty sure @Raychelle here is right, it's somehow related to a bearing in the alternator. Do check that first then update us here. It could be a minor thing but eventually it could worsen and just... become plain annoyance.

Since the whir stops when you lift off, it's probably a belt or alternator pulley problem. Using your warranty and having the dealer inspect it was a wise decision. I hope the solution is simple
